“From this home’s entrance, a dramatic gallery spans the length of the interior to culminate in the impressive coastal view. This is a comfortable and informal beach house, resplendent with natural light and generous indoor and outdoor living areas. On this project, the architect has carefully and successfully stitched together the needs of a family into a home that is capable of offering comfortable and flexible beachside living.“ - NZIA

About

The Appleford beach house is designed to accomodate their friends and growing family and the demands of the coastal situation on the beachfront at Mount Maunganui.

The long narrow site required articulating the access from the arrival to the west through the site to the beach at the east. A wide gallery with a cedar clad spine wall, links the entry to the open plan living on the beachfront passing a landscaped internal courtyard with a fireplace providing evening entertaining space out of the seabreeze and south westerly winds whilest still having sea views through the living pavilion.

The beachouse is a very open pavilion with kitchen, the hub of the house, featuring a large pantry and coffee station. Despite the large amount of glass affording natural light, ventilation and views the house feels private and relaxed.

Good public and private space articulation means you don’t look into any bedrooms or bathrooms you enter and move through the house to the living and entertaining spaces.

The bedrooms all sneak seaviews. The use of cedar weatherboard creates texture to the exterior and interior make the house a relaxed, comfortable and interesting place to be… nobody wants to leave…
